BIG RABBIT BY GELITIN

Rabbit (Artesina, Piemont, Italy. 2005), a gigantic pink cuddly toy made primarily of straw and wool, is the work of the artist group, Gelitin. It’s so big that one begins to get an idea of how small and insignificant a Liliputian must have felt next to Gulliver. According to the legend, dozens of grannies knitted one ton of wool into the rabbit’s skin, contributing to a work, which is to remain on site for 20 years-and left to rot.

Each year in Scotland, thousands of men bearing torches parade through the streets on the last Tuesday of January to mark the end of the Yule Season. Though only officially begun in 1881, the Up Helly Aa day fire festivals have their roots in ancient Anglo Saxon rites. Revelers pay homage to this history by dressing in full costume and electing a Jarl to head the festivities. The Jarl and his committee lead the torch-bearers through the town to a replica of a Viking longship, which they set ablaze with the torches. After the burning, townspeople retire to local public halls for a night of dancing and performances. The Wednesday after is taken as a day of recovery before “Hop Night” when the festivities continue until morning.

On Tuesday evening, a vacant warehouse in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood caught fire. It took more than 200 firefighters the entire night to bring the blaze under control.

With Chicago facing some of the coldest temperatures of the season, the water used to battle the flames froze to the exterior of the building. The warehouse-turned-ice cube has attracted visitors from across the area, who have been documenting the uncommon sight through Instagram.

The five-alarm fire—the largest in Chicago since 2004—thankfully resulted in no injuries.

A Beautiful Walkable Map for Berlin’s 775th Anniversary

In 2012, Berlin celebrated its 775th anniversary. Among the many festivities, several large open-air exhibitions were constructed, including a beautiful walkable map of Berlin, called City of Diversity, placed in front of the largest church in the city.

The walkable map was built as a celebration of Berlin’s many years of immigration history and diversity. It was constructed by a group of artists using a 1:775 scale and 274 stencils, featuring giant colored pins with fascinating explorable facts and stories about migration to Berlin on them. Each colored pin explored a different current or historic topic of diversity in the city, ranging from religion and politics to music and culture.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, fighting between the government of President Joseph Kabila and M23 rebels has been raging on for the past few months, and the prospects of war hang heavy over the country.

American photographer Michael Christopher Brown (@michaelchristopherbrown) is in the heart of the DRC capturing the conflict. He lives in an apartment in the city of Goma and has had a variety of assignments in the country, all of which he’s captured solely on his mobile phone. This month, Newsweek International published six pages of Michael’s mobile photos documenting the M23 and the city of Goma. Michael’s affinity for mobile photography stems from its simplicity, speed and authenticity:

I primarily use a phone because it is easy, small and fun … I do not even feel like a photographer and this makes the process more interesting. There is no pressure, there is less control and there is the excitement of a new way to make pictures … Of course, equipment can be important, but what is more important is the way a photographer interacts with the people he is photographing … Depending on the situation, a phone is often not seen as a camera and that can be an advantage.
